Hey Trav, I went to Dharma Mittra a few times but I'm never in that part of town, so it was kind of out of the way. I liked it a lot, but my mat was floating all over the rug!

Thanks for writing Russell. That's a great suggestion about using the 11x17 copies, I never even thought of doing that.
I was checking out your blog as well (just subscribed!). It looks like you're doing some very cool stuff. I'm happy that what I'm writing is of some use professional bandleaders such as yourself too. Mission accomplished!

Hello Travis, I just found your blog - nice. I'm with Steve, that all these are critical in instilling confidence in the players that new charts are worth the effort. I've been in bands reading what should have been really good music, but 'chart problems' caused us to table it in frustration without giving it a fair chance.

About taping parts: I went out and bought a ream of 11x17 paper. After I print out every page of the parts on individual 8 1/2x11 pages, I re-copy them, 2-up, on 11x17, so I can just fold it in half, rather than having to tape them all. Cuts taping time in half at least, and if it's a relatively brief chart (rare) I may have no taping at all.

One thing I also do, which you haven't mentioned yet, is make sure there are good page turns every 2 pages. This often allows me to use the front & back of the 11x17 paper, so I don't have to tape a 4-page part. And the players really appreciate it.

Thanks Steve! I was, quite honestly, a little apprehensive about writing this blog because I didn't want to be too remedial, so your comment is extremely encouraging and greatly appreciated!!! Hope all is well with you too man...it's been a minute!

Travis,

GREAT stuff! I am in a constant struggle with my arranging and comp students about these issues. They don't seem to understand that details like part preparation are so important to the final performance of their work. Great Blog Man!

Hello,

I am a jazzpianist from Norway. I was wondering if it is possible to get your transcription of Bily Taylors A train? I really loved it, but it is too hard for me to transcribe it myself.
